Cooler Days, Cosy Babies! What Should My Baby Wear?

As the weather starts to cool, many parents find themselves asking the same question: “Am I dressing my baby right?”

Unlike adults, babies can’t regulate their body temperature as easily so getting the balance right between warm and comfortable is key.

The Golden Rule: One Extra Layer

A simple guide is to dress your baby in one more layer than you’re wearing. If you’re comfortable in a long-sleeve top and a jumper, your baby may need an extra singlet or layer underneath.

Layering is Your Best Friend

Instead of one thick outfit, opt for layers:

  • A breathable base layer (cotton singlet or bodysuit)

  • A long-sleeve onesie or outfit

  • A jumper or cardigan

  • Optional blanket for pram or car rides

Layers make it easy to adjust throughout the day as temperatures change.

Choosing the Right Fabrics

Not all warmth is created equal:

  • Cotton: breathable and gentle on skin

  • Fleece: great for warmth but can overheat quickly

  • Wool blends: ideal for colder days but ensure it’s soft and non-irritating

How to Tell if Baby is Too Hot or Cold

Skip the hands and feet—they’re often cooler naturally. Instead, check your baby’s:

  • Chest

  • Back of the neck

  • Too hot? Sweaty, flushed cheeks Too cold? Cool chest, pale skin

    Day vs Night Dressing

For sleep, follow safe sleep guidelines:

    • Use a well-fitted sleep sack instead of loose blankets

    • Adjust TOG rating based on room temperature

    • Keep the room comfortably cool—not overheated

What About Messy Play?

Cooler weather doesn’t mean missing out on play!

At Messy Bubs, we recommend:

  • Dressing babies in easy-to-remove layers

  • Bringing a spare change of clothes

  • Using outer layers you don’t mind getting messy

Messy play is all about exploration and a little mess is part of the magic.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. The key is to stay flexible, check your baby regularly, and trust your instincts.

And remember, comfort, warmth, and freedom to move will always win.
